The stupidity of bigotry.

Bigotry is stupid. Literally. I know that sounds harsh, but it is actually quite easy to substantiate. The definition of stupid is broken down into three parts according to Merriam-Webster:

1. Not intelligent: having or showing a lack of ability to learn and understand things.

2. Not sensible or logical.

3. Not able to think normally because you are drunk, tired, etc.

Now here are examples of the statements you’ll see and hear from racists that fit each prong. We’ll ignore Prong #3 because, really, who thinks clearly when they’re drunk?

Prong #1: Having or showing a lack of ability to learn and understand things.

Racist: “Well how come I don’t see any black people protesting black-on-black crime?”

Response: “Because you didn’t look, learn, or try to understand. Literally. Plus, the term black-on-black crime is racist because it’s only applied to black people despite the fact that the percentage intra-racial violence in predominantly black neighborhoods or white neighborhoods are actually quite similar because murderers tend to kill the people closest to them.”

Racist: “That’s just a bunch of drivel!”

Prong #2: Not sensible or logical.

Racist: “There’s too much government involvement. I’m tired of the government changing our way of life, telling us how to raise our children, and not giving us enough jobs. Donald Trump’s going to bring jobs!”

Response: “(insert black male or female) was just gunned down by the police. Maybe we need less police patrolling in predominantly black neighborhoods.”

Racist: “Well he/she should’ve respected the (government funded) police! See the (government funded) police are down there so often following them so much because they deserve it. They don’t raise their kids right! Why don’t they just go get a real job instead of going out there killing each other?”

Response: ” Well they’re protesting tonight.”

Racist: “Why are they blocking the street? I say run them over while screaming all lives matter‬!”

Response: “…You just said you would murder someone for protesting.”

Racist: “Well if they block the road, and inconvenience me, they deserve to die! I’m tired of people who don’t respect the law! I hope Donald Trump brings law and order before we lose our country to these savages!”

Yes, that’s a caricature, but I bet you’ve seen and heard those comments enough times to make the connection, and after a while, you will have no choice but to conclude that the bigots you are speaking to are, by definition, quite stupid.

Let’s be smarter, my friends.

No apologies,

G. Miller
